Quill suggests. You decide. Every word stays yours.

A professional screenplay editor with a writing partner built in — for the writer who wants help getting unstuck, not a ghostwriter.

Local-first · Free to start

For macOS · No credit card required · Works offline

Built for the writer who wants help.
Not a ghostwriter.

AI tools want to write FOR you, not WITH you.

Quill suggests. You approve. Every change lands as a diff in green and red — accept it, reject it, or rewrite it. The script on the page is the script you wrote.

You're juggling five apps just to get to FADE IN.

Outline on a beat board, sketch acts with `# Act 1` and `## Sub-Act`, drop `[[notes]]` and `= Synopses` inline, then write the page — all in the same window. No more shuttling between Scrivener, Notion, and ChatGPT.

Professional screenwriting software shouldn't cost $250.

Inkwell is free to start, with a $10/month Pro option when you want more help from Quill. No forced upgrades, no paywall, no learning Final Draft's UI from 2003. .fdx imports just work.

Your script shouldn't have to phone home to be edited.

Inkwell is a real desktop app. It saves locally, opens instantly, and writes offline. Quill only reaches the cloud when you ask it to — the editor never stops, even when the Wi-Fi does.

Everything you need. Nothing in your way.

A real screenplay editor, with a writing partner that knows when to keep quiet.

Brainstorm without re-explaining yourself

Quill already knows the script. Ask for a sharper twist, three takes on a line, a beat that's not landing — and get answers grounded in what you've actually written. No more pasting your script into a chat window every time.

Approve every word before it lands

Quill never auto-applies. Suggestions arrive as diffs — green for additions, red for cuts. Accept, reject, or rewrite. The page only changes when you say so.

Plays nicely with Final Draft (and everyone else)

Import .fdx and Fountain without losing a scene number, a dual-dialogue cue, or a note. Export the same way. Send pages to a producer who lives in Final Draft and they'll never know you didn't.

Writes on a plane. Writes on Wi-Fi. Writes either way.

Inkwell is a real desktop app — it opens instantly, saves locally, and never gets stuck waiting on a server. Quill only goes online when you ask it to. The editor doesn't.

Pick the right brain for the moment

A quick rewrite of a line and a structural pass on a third act aren't the same job. Choose a fast model when you're punching dialogue, a deeper one when you need the script read carefully. Switch in a click.

Set the room the way you write best

Light, Sepia, Focus, and Midnight. Industry-standard formatting under all of them. If you've written a script before, the keyboard already knows what you mean.

The format gets out of the way. Quill stays out of the way. You write.

Formatting that disappears

Industry-standard screenplay format, applied as you type. Stop fighting tab stops — start writing the next line.

Quill, on tap

Punch up a line, sketch an alternative, or rough out a scene description. Every suggestion lands as a diff you approve, reject, or edit.

Inkwell Reader · iPhone & iPad

Your scripts. Anywhere you read.

Inkwell Reader is a clean, fast script reader for iPhone and iPad. Bring an Inkwell account and Quill comes too.

A real script reader for iOS

Open .ink, Fountain, and PDF scripts. Pinch, scroll, scrub through scenes — pages laid out the way they're meant to be read, sized for the screen in your hand.

Find anything, fast

Full-text search and a scene jump-list, so flipping to page 47 doesn't mean flipping through 47 pages.

Reads on a plane

Scripts live on-device. No spinner, no sync prompt, no signal required. Pull a script up and it's there.

Quill, if you've got an account

Sign in to your Inkwell account and Quill rides along — same writing partner, on whatever script you're reading. Use it on the couch, on the train, before the room. No account needed to just read.

Writing in bursts?

Grab a credit pack instead of a subscription — pay for what you use, nothing else. Useful when one script needs the heavier models and the next one doesn't.

Prices in USD. Pro and credit packs available inside the app.

Built by a writer who got tired of the workaround.

I built Inkwell because I was tired of choosing between $250 legacy software and explaining the same idea to ChatGPT over and over. I wanted a real editor that understood the craft — and a partner that already knew the script.

James Rundquist, producer, writer, creator of Inkwell

Inkwell is in active development. Feedback from writers — about the editor, about Quill, about whatever's missing — shapes what ships next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Inkwell and Quill AI.

Does Quill write for me?

No. Quill suggests—it doesn't author. It can brainstorm ideas, offer dialogue alternatives, or help punch up a line, but every suggestion requires your explicit approval. You're always the writer. Quill is the assistant.

What about copyright and IP?

You own everything you write in Inkwell, period. We don't claim any rights to your material. Using Quill doesn't transfer ownership or create shared authorship—it's legally equivalent to using spell-check or a thesaurus.

Will my writing train the model?

No. We don't store your scripts or use them to train AI models. When you use Quill, only the necessary text snippet is sent to the AI API for processing, and we use data opt-out protections. Your creative work stays yours.

Do I need internet access?

Not for writing! Inkwell works completely offline. You only need internet when you want to use Quill AI. All your script editing, formatting, import/export, and file management works without Wi-Fi.

Can I export to Final Draft?

Yes. Inkwell fully supports Final Draft's .fdx format for both import and export. Your formatting, scene numbers, notes, and dual dialogue are preserved. You can seamlessly collaborate with people using Final Draft.

How does Quill protect my voice?

Quill analyzes your script's existing style and context to make suggestions that fit your tone. Plus, every suggestion appears as a diff—you see exactly what would change before accepting. If something feels off, just reject it. Your voice remains intact.

Is this like ChatGPT writing my script?

No. Quill is designed specifically for screenwriting assistance, not autonomous generation. It works within your script's context, offers options, and requires approval. Think of it as a writing partner who listens and suggests, not a robot churning out pages.

Can I use Inkwell for free forever?

Yes! The free plan includes the full screenplay editor, import/export, unlimited scripts, and a monthly allotment of AI suggestions. You can write complete screenplays without ever paying. Upgrade to Pro for more AI usage, or purchase credit packs for pay-as-you-go flexibility—no subscription required.
