# Inkwell

A screenplay editor that respects the writer.

Inkwell is a professional macOS screenplay editor with a writing partner built in. Quill helps only when you ask: brainstorm a scene, punch up a line, or catch a voice that has drifted. Every idea arrives as a diff you accept or reject, and nothing changes without your say-so.

Local-first. Free to start. Quill only goes online when you ask.

## What it is

Inkwell is a real desktop app for macOS. It opens instantly, saves locally, and never stalls waiting on a server. It is a complete, keyboard-first screenplay editor: industry-standard formatting, outlining, inline notes, revisions, and interchange that hold up in a real production. The headline feature is a writing partner, Quill, that waits to be asked.

## How Quill works

Quill is a chat-based writing partner that already knows your script. You talk to it like a script editor, and it works in three steps:

1. **Ask.** Quill has the whole script in context. Ask for a sharper twist or three takes on a line. No pasting pages into a chat window.
2. **See the diff.** Its idea lands in your script as a proposal: green for additions, red for cuts. Shown, never applied.
3. **Decide.** Accept, reject, or rewrite, line by line or all at once. The page changes only when you say so. Undo anytime.

What Quill will not do, on purpose:

- **It never writes for you.** Quill suggests; it does not author. Every idea needs your explicit approval before a single character lands on the page.
- **It does not train on your scripts.** Your work is never used to train AI models. Only the snippet needed to answer is sent for processing, with data opt-out protections.
- **You own everything.** Using Quill does not transfer ownership or create shared authorship. Legally, it is the same as using spell-check or a thesaurus.
- **It stays out of your way.** No autocomplete hijacking your cursor, no pop-ups mid-sentence. Quill is a chat partner that acts only when you ask it to.

## Features

- Auto-formats as you type: sluglines, character cues, and action lines format the instant you write them.
- Keyboard-first: Tab and Shift-Tab cycle elements (Scene Heading, Action, Character, Dialogue, Parenthetical, Transition); smart Enter and force markers (@, !, ~, >) override the guess.
- Approve every word: suggestions arrive as diffs (green for additions, red for cuts); rename a character across 90 pages and approve each change, or wave them all through at once.
- Outline navigator and beat board: see the whole story at once, rearrange on cards, and drop straight back into the page.
- Inline notes and synopses: [[notes]] and = synopses travel with the file and never reach the printed page.
- Find and replace across the entire script.
- Voice match: Quill learns each character's cadence and flags a line that drifts out of character.
- Revision Mode: industry-standard revision tracking with colored generations and revision marks.
- Generate Sides: pull every scene a character appears in into a clean, page-numbered set.
- Title pages, edited in place and carried through every export.
- Import and export Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain, and PDF, with scene numbers, notes, and dual dialogue preserved.
- Industry-leading PDF import: recover a locked PDF back into a fully editable script.
- Four themes (Light, Sepia, Focus, Midnight) with the same muscle memory under each.
- Works fully offline; only Quill reaches the cloud, and only when you ask.

## The iOS Reader

Inkwell Reader is a free companion app for iPhone. It opens .ink, Fountain, and PDF scripts, laid out the way they are meant to be read and sized for the screen in your hand. It has full-text search and a scene jump-list, a sides view that highlights one character's lines, and on-device offline reading (no signal required). No account is needed to read, and Quill rides along once you sign in. Free on the App Store, iOS 17+.

## Pricing

Professional screenwriting software should not cost $250. The full editor is free and always will be; you only pay for Quill when you want more room to use it.

- **Free, $0 forever:** the full editor, industry-standard formatting, import and export of Fountain, FDX, and PDF, unlimited scripts, works offline. 100 welcome credits, then 15 AI credits per month.
- **Pro, $10 / month:** everything in Free, plus 500 AI credits per month, access to advanced models for higher-quality suggestions, add-on credit packs at $4.99 for 150 credits, priority support, and cancel anytime.
- **Pro Annual, $100 / year:** the same Pro plan billed once a year. Save $20 compared to monthly.

Credits are only spent when you ask Quill for help, one credit per suggestion, not per keystroke. Writing, formatting, import and export, and unlimited scripts are always free.
